{"id":157,"date":"2012-06-03T01:36:21","date_gmt":"2012-06-03T01:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hullyjoe.com\/andrew-hull\/?page_id=157"},"modified":"2020-05-26T23:56:32","modified_gmt":"2020-05-26T23:56:32","slug":"swings-and-roundabouts","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hullyjoe.com\/andrew-hull\/poetry\/swings-and-roundabouts\/","title":{"rendered":"Swings and Roundabouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The rain faded suddenly, exactly as it came,<\/p>\n<p>Clouds which defeated suns retreated just the same.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving pools like shining jewels betraying lows and highs<\/p>\n<p>Fading into shifting sands while staring at the skies<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some welcomed watered lawns and cupboards free from dust<\/p>\n<p>Others only ever saw the damaged crops and rust<\/p>\n<p>But she hung out another load<\/p>\n<p>While he spread gravel on the road<\/p>\n<p>And when their boots were neatly stowed<\/p>\n<p>They sat and shared a crust<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only those who know the dry that know the joy rain brings<\/p>\n<p>For what\u2019s lost on the roundabouts is picked up on the swings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Summer curled into the autumn as the days grew short<\/p>\n<p>And evenings early hours now had little to report<\/p>\n<p>The golden noise of bird and bee became a silent chill<\/p>\n<p>While coolest greens and shadows turned to crimson on the hill<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many cursed the coming cold and railed against the night<\/p>\n<p>Others revelled in the chance to pull the shutters tight<\/p>\n<p>She took preserves from the store<\/p>\n<p>He split timber \u2013 and cut more<\/p>\n<p>And on the rug that warmed the floor<\/p>\n<p>They shared the fire\u2019s light<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Autumns can take nothing that won\u2019t come back in the Springs<\/p>\n<p>For what\u2019s lost on the roundabouts is picked up on the swings<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When they only had each other, that was what they trusted<\/p>\n<p>And children came like summer rain so lives were readjusted<\/p>\n<p>What theyd saved and plans theyd made were quickly swept aside<\/p>\n<p>And forgotten in a single puff of true parental pride<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The house that was too big became the house that was too small<\/p>\n<p>And they held on on and let it shrink and grow around them all<\/p>\n<p>And when it came an empty nest<\/p>\n<p>They took the chance to take a rest<\/p>\n<p>And thought each other truly blessed<\/p>\n<p>To live within those walls<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For only those who\u2019ve been so close can know how parting stings<\/p>\n<p>And whats lost on the roundabouts is picked up on the swings<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While their lives are simple, they are never left in need<\/p>\n<p>And if they smile, it\u2019s not because they have not disagreed<\/p>\n<p>She had youthful dreams that faded into aging skin<\/p>\n<p>While he wore settlers clothes over &nbsp;traveller within<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So many that they know have chased their dreams and travelled far<\/p>\n<p>So many searched so hard they don\u2019t know who or where they are<\/p>\n<p>They have held on to the claim<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll live together &#8211; die the same<\/p>\n<p>And they can neither praise nor blame<\/p>\n<p>The people that they are<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They both took care to share their life, with all it takes and brings<\/p>\n<p>And what\u2019s lost on the roundabouts is picked up on the swings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The rain faded suddenly, exactly as it came, Clouds which defeated suns retreated just the same.
