She\u2019s exactly the same age as me, though seems a little older<\/p>\n
In height, her chin would be about the level of my shoulder<\/p>\n
She is slightly overweight, but no more than she deserves<\/p>\n
It just serves to accentuate her ample bumps and curves<\/p>\n
In stature, she is upright, in the way that just improves<\/p>\n
Her overall appearance and the way her body moves<\/p>\n
That, of course, is how I see her, and the image that I use<\/p>\n
For I make a point of not looking directly at The Muse<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
She has abundant flame red hair, with just a hint of grey<\/p>\n
And she rarely ties it up unless it\u2019s really in the way<\/p>\n
She wears a little make-up, to enhance not to disguise<\/p>\n
The laugh-lines at the corners of her ever-twinkling eyes<\/p>\n
Her lips are full and tender with a smile pure and kind<\/p>\n
And she keeps them RED \u2013 the way the maker must have had in mind<\/p>\n
The type of clothes that \u2018swish\u2019 are the type she tends to choose<\/p>\n
And she \u2018swishes\u2019 when she comes, and also when she goes \u2013 The Muse<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
She drinks a little too much but she hardly ever smokes<\/p>\n
And while she\u2019s always playful, she hardly ever jokes<\/p>\n
I have learnt to pay attention every single time she speaks<\/p>\n
For she may disclose a whole lot and then disappear for weeks<\/p>\n
She can disappear for years if she is not understood<\/p>\n
And her absence, like her presence, can be both bad and good<\/p>\n
She can nag at me incessantly, or just leave cryptic clues<\/p>\n
And I do not know a magic that will conjure up The Muse<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
As a younger man I chased her \u2013 and so she would hide for ages<\/p>\n
While my pages filled with empty words (or stayed as empty pages)<\/p>\n
I would call out for her daily and would spends my nights bereft<\/p>\n
While I pushed around the ideas and the thoughts that I had left<\/p>\n
Then I\u2019d give up hope of finding her and say a last goodbye<\/p>\n
And then catch a flash of red in the corner of my eye<\/p>\n
She would beckon me to follow, with no way I could refuse<\/p>\n
-That is how it used to be between me and The Muse<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
At the age that I am now I worry less that she\u2019ll appear<\/p>\n
Which means, of course, she seems to always whisper in my ear<\/p>\n
And if she\u2019s sitting quietly or if she needs to roar<\/p>\n
I just enjoy her presence and I do not ask for more<\/p>\n
I have learnt how to decipher both the silence and the noise<\/p>\n
It\u2019s my duty to learn to love whichever she enjoys<\/p>\n
For we must go together so can neither win, nor lose<\/p>\n
She exists as I exist, and will die with me, The Muse<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
For all of us there is a Muse, however we may see them<\/p>\n
And we can only partner with, not replicate or \u2018be\u2019 them<\/p>\n
Some of them are fickle and some of them are fine<\/p>\n
Some are found by fortune and others by design<\/p>\n
Some guide the hand attentively \u2013 some never say a word<\/p>\n
And some will go un-heeded, while others go unheard<\/p>\n
Regardless of our contact \u2013 we are not \u2018ones\u2019 \u2013 but \u2018twos\u2019<\/p>\n
It is up to us to find the other part of us \u2013 The Muse<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
So if you see me writing or just lost inside my head<\/p>\n
Then picture in the background an obscure form, in red<\/p>\n
She\u2019ll probably be lounging on a chaise-lounge – or a chair<\/p>\n
With a soft-lit lamp highlighting the colour of the hair<\/p>\n
That\u2019s twirled between her fingers, while in her other hand<\/p>\n
She holds a glass half full of wine – a most exotic brand<\/p>\n
And if perchance I speak \u2013 pay no heed to MY views<\/p>\n
But try to picture what she\u2019s really on about \u2013 The Muse.<\/p>\n
