Two pennies on a cedar kip
And each one shows a different face
They come together on that strip
As partners in this time and place
And soon they soar into the sky
A dance of chance for one and all
A twinkle placed in every eye
That waits to see which way they fall
The coins have travelled far and wide
Been traded, saved, swapped and spent
Found pockets in which to reside
Been lost and found, changed and lent.
They have been treasured and adored
In hopes and dreams both great and small
And now they rest upon the board
To wait and see which way they fall
The two are brought to centre court
Like lovers on their wedding day
Or players in a sacred sport
That do not know which game they play
One flick and they begin to fly
While many lives are held in thrall
Each time they turn a chance goes by
We wait and see which way they fall
Each penny bears a head and tail
Two separate faces on each side
At any time one will prevail
One face must show, the other hide
The two must always co-exist
And both obey the spinners call
To neither favour nor resist
But wait and see which way they fall
The day must always chase the night
And autumn never sees the spring
The world is always dark and light
With every season in full swing
We all exist in this embrace
For there is right and wrong in all
We’re brought together in this place
To wait and see which way we fall.
